WHY THIS EXISTS
The net catches what the deck doesn't. Until it can't.
The perimeter safety net is the last engineered defence between a person on a helideck and a fall to whatever's below — sea, deck plate, support steel, fifty metres of platform structure. It catches passengers, crew and equipment that go over the edge.
Wear and tear is inevitable. Different helideck manufacturers use different netting materials — fabric, coated steel cable, polymer mesh — each with different failure modes and lifespans. UV degrades fabric. Salt corrodes steel cable. Impact damage compounds invisibly until the day the net is needed.
Periodic drop-load testing is the only way to know the net still works. When it doesn't, replacement is the only acceptable answer. We do both.
THE TEST
Real load, real drop. Witnessed by class.
A calibrated test load is suspended above the net at the minimum drop height prescribed by the relevant standard. The load is released. The net's behaviour during catch — deflection, integrity of the netting and frame, condition of fasteners and tie-points after impact — is documented and assessed.
We perform drop-load testing on any perimeter safety net regardless of who manufactured the deck or supplied the netting. Tests are witnessed by classification society as required, certified, and documented in a written report acceptable to flag-state authorities and HSE auditors.
Pass means continued service to the next inspection cycle. Fail means immediate replacement before the deck returns to operation. The judgement is documented. The decision is the operator's.
REPLACEMENT NETS
Aluminium netting. Specified to outlive the deck.
1. 20-year corrosion warranty
Marine-grade aluminium alloy doesn't corrode in saltwater, doesn't degrade under UV, doesn't fatigue in cyclic loading. The warranty isn't marketing — it's the documented service life of the material.
2. No preventive maintenance
Coated-steel and fabric nets need inspection, recoating, retensioning or replacement on documented intervals. Aluminium netting needs neither. The total cost of ownership across a 20-year window is structurally lower.
3. Compatible with any deck
Whether the original deck is aluminium (ours or competitor) or steel, our aluminium replacement netting integrates with the existing perimeter framing using standard fasteners and class-approved tie-points.
4. Specified on every AO new build
Our own helidecks ship with aluminium netting as standard. The same netting is available for retrofit onto any existing helideck where the perimeter framing accepts it.
